. colorado, ohio, virginia? >> yeah, that's right. and think about this, the romney campaign didn't run television ads during the democratic national convention or the republican national convention. a cardinal rule of politics is when you go on tv, you stay on tv. the romney campaign broke that and it hurt them in the polls heading into that debate. however, as that new yorker cover that's coming out next week sort of captured the zeitgeist, he had a strong debate performance. his campaign says they raised $12 million in the course of 48 hours just in that day after the debate, but they haven't released their fund-raising numbers. we shall see what their numbers are pretty soon here. >> peter hamby, the new yorker having fun, showing romney talking to an empty chair, trying to symbolize that the president wasn't completely present in that wednesday debate. thanks so much. peter hamby in washington. >> the drop in the unemployment rate is a big headline from the jobs report, but is that what we should be focusing on right now? cnn's chief business correspondent ali velshi weighing in. >

is headed in the right direction, they're optimistic about this. if they're a romney person the country is headed in the wrong direction, they're not optimistic about the economy. the only number that got out of that bubble where we saw it wasn't just partisan was this idea is the economy in recovery, and that got to 57%. you can't get to 57% if you don't have actually folks that are on one side, you know, bleeding in and believing factually the economy is in recovery and factually the economy is in recovery. the argument now is of course should it be in a better recovery and i think even as you've had the romney campaign saying hey we're in recovery despite, that's been their new mantra. that's the one number that goes beyond the partisan liners. tony is right, on the direction of the country, on optimism on the economy in the next 12 months it is through the prism of their presidential vote that we're seeing people make, express their opinion on that. >> you know, chuck, the big number you've told us, the big demographic is what happens with women. i guess that's going to be a tough q

pocket? mr. romney very clearly pulls something from his right pocket and he pops it on to the podium in front of him. violation. violation. according to the conspiracy, complete with the grainy, slow mo youtube videos, this is mr. romney cheating. now he must have been working from note cards the entire debate. the explanation from the romney campaign is mr. romney was not pulling notes out of his pocket. he was pulling out of his pocket a handkerchief. sure enough, a little later on, oop, in the debate mr. romney is seen wiping his nose with said handkerchief. so whether you are persuaded by mitt romney wiping his nose on what is supposed to be his crib sheet notes, if you're on the left, again, like this is a conspiracy theory that just does not help. president obama did not win the first debate against mitt romney. whether or not you're happy about that he didn't win. but if your takeaway from this conspiracy theory in this debate is the reason the president didn't win is because mitt romney cheated, then what is the utility of that theory for you? what is the utility of that info
